I’m a ravenous consumer of video games.  I buy a handful of games every month, there’s no slow month or off-peak period for me.  As long as games are being released, there is a good chance that at least one of them will interest me.  Thanks to the recent surge in quality F2P titles, like Runes of Magic or Dungeon & Dragons Online, I have a few other avenues of digital deliciousness to investigate.  My rampant consumerism hasn’t ..read the full article

The tabloid papers would offer far more interesting headlines.

I have a lot of respect for those who see a new piece of tech, or a new online tool, and their instinctive response is: I wonder how that can be a game. That’s very much the approach taken to Google Maps by Australian indie team Binary Space. 2010’s Class 3 Outbreak will take place within the top-down view of Google’s mapping technology, where a zombie attack is taking place. A squad of humans as they try to stay alive ..read the full article

Copyright Mark Coleran - follow the links to his blog for goodness sakes.

I’ve been pondering looking into the role computers play in TV and movies, simply because it’s quite so hilariously silly. From Bones’ 3D hologram-o-machine (best I can find thanks to the joy of Fox) that can instantly conjure any murderous scenario the cast think of, to those peculiar PCs all film stars use that require only rapid keyboard inputs despite their clearly cursor-orientated design. I also find myself peculiarly interested in collecting together the names of all the Google alternatives ..read the full article

I’ve not had a chance to go through it yet myself, but for those of you who want to read things the second they hit … Here’s the Siege of Mirkwood release notes.

Cryptic, gravitas-laden teasers are of little use – genuinely seeing a game in action is all that matters when it comes to trailertime. So, it’s relief to be able to show you goodly human beans just what Splash Damage’s upcoming hybrid single/multiplayer shooter Brink really looks like. This video focuses specifically on the (optional) auto-jump/climb system they call SMART. It’s caused a bit of a fuss as Some Gentlemen have expressed that it must mean the game has been stupidised ..read the full article

The Site

The site remains… basically unchanged after three years.  I change the header now and again and things on the side bar come and go, but the look remains about the same.

Every time WordPress.com introduces a new template, I try it out with the test version of the blog (not available to the public) and decide to stick with the current template.  Only once have I actually changed the template, and that only lasted a 20 minutes or so.

Does that ..read the full article

I find myself reviewing Space Rangers 2: Reboot for PC Gamer magazine UK. Which is their business entirely, so you won’t hear any opinion on it from me here, bar linking to the review if it ends up online. But! It did create a little brain-tickle of worry that we hadn’t mentioned this revised version of the old multi-genre dear on RPS. Why should you care? Well, because it’s what many of the folks who are now known as Katauri ..read the full article

I have a tendancy to walk off cliffs in LotRO. Most of this time this on accident, like when I don’t realize the ground is suddenly going to give out under me and turn into a 90 degree drop. Angmar!!!

I’m very familiar with the nasty “snap!” sound and walking debuff, unfortunately.

Every so often, though, it’s on purpose. There are reasons. A handful of them are arguably good. There’s that gold node you just need to get to before you sign ..read the full article

The boss looms before you.  Psh!  Boss?  More like pansy!  You’ve worked on this guy for a whileand are just not yet on farm status.  You look at your raid frames and see that everyone seems to be taking minimal damage.  The tank is taking slight damage, but it’s nothing like the early days of learning Patchwerk.  Your mana bar is moderately full, everyone seems to have everything under control.  Your finger hovers over Smite/Lightning Bolt/Wrath/Holy Shock.

You start pressing.

Commander of the RPS Grande Armee, Tim Stone, posted about the final hours trickling away before the release of the Hist War demo. Well, that waiting is over, and the demo is available to download. Hurrah! Find some very old Beta footage of the game, a less appropriate film-link than the one Tim did and a book question below… (...)Read the rest of Napoleonic Irrigation: HistWar Demo Out (75 words)

The new Eve expansion, Dominion, is out this week, and it threatens to shake up the game’s territorial system to a degree that has not been seen since territory was formalised back in 2004. The new system will require more active maintenance for players wanting to benefit from holding sovereignty, and should reduce some of the “AFK Empires” we’ve seen in recent years. I doubt it will do anything to fragment or reduce the power of the existing power-blocs, however, ..read the full article

France has infused my body with garlic

We don’t often post about pre-release mods, but I’m making an exception for Postscript. Occasional RPS-contributor and Resolution top-dog Lewis Denby is working on a Half-life 2 mod. “File it next to things like Dear Esther and Radiator, probably, except more game-like than the former, and more formally-structured than the latter,” he says. In other word, short-form, experimental, character-driven narrative game mods. Since he’s written probably more extensively than any other critic on this sort of game – from ..read the full article

The extra 3.3 articles will have to wait tomorrow, I eventually decided to spend more time on the small datamining issues I had and got a better preview of Shadowmourne out of it. It also means that the shamans will get some tier 10 love really soon. Also, the blue posters will most likely be back today!

Shadowmourne - Legendary AxeThe end of the PTR is near and it's time for a new preview of Shadowmourne, mostly to give you a ..read the full article

Yesterday I was lucky enough to get invited to a Palace of Ferzhul run – one of the most difficult TSO instances there is (group instances at least). This zone is used in Chapter 8 for the TSO chapter quests, and drops some incredible loot. I had a blast tagging along even though I was VERY under geared and died 6 times. We went to the instance with one templar, a shadowknight, swashbuckler, ranger, coercer, and myself as the troubador. ..read the full article

My shaman, Lissiel on Elune, finally hit 80! My goal over Thanksgiving break was to hit 80 on my shaman, and I met that goal!

I have an enhancement spec & a resto spec. I’m working on getting them geared up, and such. I’ll be doing some more shaman research soon and I’ll probably do a shaman-related post or two over the next few weeks as I work on gearing up that character some more on non-raid days.

The MMO Gamer

This show was recorded on November 20th, 2009.

It’s only just being posted now because our audio editor was occupied with entertaining relatives from out of town and shoving turkey down his throat for most of the past week.

We hope you enjoy it, anyway!

Episode #11 will be posted at the regularly scheduled time.

I’ve got a confession to make.

A lot of what I talk about I didn’t come up with. Which isn’t to say, that I’m copy-pasting someone else’s work, but it is to say that there’s a lot of places that I draw inspiration from. One in particular that I love is Steve Chandler’s book, “100 Ways to Motivate Others”. (Fair warning, that’s an affiliate link so should you buy the book, I will make a small amount of money.
